Spray any existing weeds with a non-selective weed killer e.g. ‘Round up’. Allow 10-14 days to achieve total kill.
- Loosen soil on site by hand, rotary hoe or bobcat. At this stage any vegetation or rocks should be removed.
- Level and shape the site to your requirements ensuring there will not be any drainage problems. (e.g shape and slope away from buildings and paths/ slabs). It is recommended to allow 80mm – 100mm down from edges for turf underlay and turf. Turf is around 30mm- 40mm thick.
- A minimum depth of 50mm of quality turf underlay should be spread evenly over entire site.
- Start to lay turf around the perimeter of the site and then fill in the center using a staggered brick like pattern. Ensure turf is firmly butted together without overlapping or stretching of the turf rolls. Turf can be cut to size/shape using a sharpen-spade or knife. On sloping ground lay across the incline.
- A lawn roller is recommended (but not essential) to roll in the newly laid turf to make sure there are no air pockets and the turf roots are firmly making contact with the soil.
- Water the newly laid lawn once to twice daily depending on weather / season conditions for the first 2-4 weeks, until the new turf has taken root to the soil. This can be checked by trying to lift an edge of a turf roll. If it can not be lifted from the soil, root establishment has occurred and the new turf has taken.
- Mow the new lawn appropriately 4 weeks after installation (varies depending on season). First mowing should be higher to avoid scalping of the new lawn. Following mowing height can be gradually adjusted down until required height is achieved. Generally only one third of the leaf blade should be removed in one mowing.
- Fertilise your new lawn in spring and autumn with an appropriate lawn fertiliser. Thoroughly water the fertiliser in to avoid burning of leaves. A cool overcast day is recommended to apply fertiliser.
